As he regretted that Syrians rivals were determined to fight to ‘the end’, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for a political dialogue.
In a press conference, Ban said that the military means would not bring an end to the ongoing crisis in Syria.
"Unfortunately, both sides, government and opposition forces, seem to be determined to see an end by military means,” Ban said.
"I think military means will not bring an answer," he added, calling for "political dialogue reflecting the genuine aspirations and will of the Syrian people."
UN envoy to Syria, Al-Akhdar Al-Ibrahimi, is to arrive in New York in the weekend to Ban on his recent talks with President Bahsar al-Assad and opposition figures.
The veteran Algerian Diplomat will brief UN Security Council envoys on Monday and hold talks with ministers on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings.
Then Ibrahimi "may have some strategy to be conveyed to Syrian authorities for resolution of this issue," Ban said.
