Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as chief executive of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) met with the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York, IRNA state-run news agency reported.
The two leaders discussed developments in Syria and the Middle East during the meeting that took place on Sunday on the sidelines of the recently-opened 67th session of the General Assembly.
The two officials discussed international affairs, including Middle East’s developments, as one of the key topics discussed in the talks was the Syrian crisis.
“Effective steps should be taken for reforming the structure of UN in order to install a fair and democratic framework so that General Assembly and Secretary General will be enabled to fulfill their missions,” Ahmadinejad said.
Referring to Iran’s nuclear issue, Ahmadinejad stated that removing the ambiguities in this regard will surely help resolving the current stalemate in nuclear talks and will help the negotiating sides to achieve results more easily.
Commenting on the Zionist regime’s threats against Iran, he pointed out that his country does not believe that the threats should be responded with threats, but these threats should be condemned.
For his part, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hailed Iran for successful holding of the NAM Summit in August in Tehran.
“My meeting with the (Supreme) Leader of the Islamic Revolution (Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei) was a memorable one,” he noted.
UN Chief termed Iran as few countries which play a crucial role in resolving the Syrian crises.
He noted that the UN special envoy in Syria affairs, Al-Akhdar Al-Ibrahimi is willing to cooperate with Iran on forming a contact group for resolving the Syrian crisis.
Ban called on Iran to support Ibrahimi in fulfilling his mission in Syria.
In addition, Agence France Presse said that Ban urged Iran to take the necessary measures to build international confidence in Tehran's nuclear program, which the West suspects is a cover for developing atomic weapons but which Iran insists is for peaceful purposes only.
In his capacity as NAM rotating chairman, Iranian President also discussed the NAM’s problems with Ban.
