Progressive Socialist Party leader Lebanese MP Walid Jumblatt sharply criticized on Thursday before his cadres the electoral law submitted by March 14 figures, noting that there are some people in Lebanon who “didn’t forget the ‘War of Mountain’ and want to retaliate through an electoral law,” Al-diyar local daily reported Friday.
According to the newspaper, Jumblatt confirmed his refusal to the division of Chouf and Aley mountain regions into five constituencies, stressing that the electoral law represents for him a matter of life or death, while supporting the law of sixties.
March 14 proposal divides the Chouf into three constituencies; the first covers the Higher Chouf, the second covers Al-Manasef region and its neighborhood down to Deir al-Qamar, and the third covers Kharroob region.
This deprives Jumblatt of 4 or 5 deputies in Chouf and another 3 in Aley. This law was adopted in 1958 supported by President Camille Chamoun, which led to the failure of martyr Kamal Jumblatt in Chouf in favor of the late Qahtan Hamada.
