Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moallem resumed official meetings on the sidelines of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarter in New York Saturday.
According to Syrian news agency SANA, Al-Moallem met with Lebanon's Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour and discussed the brotherly relations and the latest developments.
“Al-Moallem briefed his Lebanese counterpart on the latest developments pertaining to the mission of the UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and Syria's efforts to make his mission a success in a way that serves Syria's sovereignty and stability,” SANA stated.
Al-Moallem also met with Brahimi and discussed his mission in Syria, stressing that “the success of Brahimi's mission depends on halting support, funds, and armament of the armed groups in order to start the dialogue.”
Moreover, the Syrian foreign minister met UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, briefing him on the armed groups’ attacks against the Syrian public and private properties as well as the infrastructure institutions.
In this context, Al-Moallem stressed that “the economic sanctions imposed by the US and EU are the basic problem behind the Syrian people's livelihood,” adding that “lifting sanctions is much better than working to deal with their repercussions.”
Al-Moallem further met with Togo Foreign Minister, Elliot Ohin, presenting a review on the latest security developments in Syria, as the latter promised to “convey the reality to the leadership of his country”, stressing the importance of continuing the bilateral consultations.
The meetings were attended by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Miqdad, Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar Al-Jaafari, and Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jihad Maqdisi.
