Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani on Sunday voiced his opposition to toppling any Lebanese cabinet by taking to the streets.
“Attempts to storm the Grand Serail are rejected at all times. Toppling cabinets in the street is totally rejected,” Qabbani said in a televised speech. “Pressuring the prime minister to resign by taking to the street is forbidden,” he added.
On Sunday, demonstrators congregating in Beirut for the funeral of slain Internal Security Forces intelligence chief Wissam al-Hasan attempted to storm the Grand Serail. They attacked police and clashed with them. Police then used tear gas to prevent the attackers from storming the Serail, headquarters of Prime Minister Najib Miqati.
