The ambassadors to Lebanon of the five permanent United Nations Security Council members held talks on Monday with President Michel Suleiman on the current security situation in Lebanon voicing their support to Lebanese powers to seek the peaceful political course.

U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly said after the meeting that the five countries “will stand by Lebanon during these hard times”.

The meeting was attended by ambassadors to Lebanon of five permanent member countries in the U.N. Security Council foreign– France, Britain, China, Russia and the United States.

“It is up to the Lebanese powers to decide which path they want to take in Lebanon,” Plumbly said. “The meeting was held at our request to underline our solidarity with Lebanon at this difficult time,” continued Plumbly.

Plumbly’s remarks come amid a tense and violent atmosphere in the country after the Friday’s assassination of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan, head of the police’s Information Branch, in the Beirut neighborhood of Achrafieh.

Plumbly condemned the blast and said the U.N. stressed the need to refer those involved in the bombing to the judiciary. “The U.N. reiterates once again its condemnation of any attempt that aims at destabilizing Lebanon through political assassinations,” Plumbly underlined.
