In a statement issued Monday, the army lamented the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan, adding that it “will not allow his death to be turned into an attempt to assassinate the country.”

“The army will have strict measures in areas witnessing sectarian and religious tension in order to prevent Lebanon from turning into a battlefield to settle regional scores,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the army also called on political parties to be cautious with “their stances, opinions, and with popular mobilization because the fate of the country is at stake.”

Following Hasan’s funeral, which was held in Downtown Beirut on Sunday, mourners attempted to storm the Grand Serail after being provoked by one of Al-Mustaqbal program presenter. Police clashed with some of the protesters and used tear gas to prevent them reaching the cabinet headquarters.
