European Union Foreign Minister Catherin Ashton stressed Tuesday her the union’s support to Lebanon’s stability, considering in a short visit she made to Lebanon that some sides are trying to create conflict to “turn eyes away” from the regional conflict.
Ashton told the Lebanese president that “the European Union supports Lebanon, its stability, and independence, and avoiding any political vacuum.”
The National News Agency further reported that Ashton emphasized the importance of national unity and supporting President Sleiman’s efforts regarding dialogue.
This comes a day after ambassadors of the five permanent members in the Security Council and UN secretary general representative in Lebanon, expressed support to the government in a press conference
they held Monday.
The EU official also met PM Najib Miqati in the Grand Serail and expressed “fear over Lebanon’s stability,” considering that some parts are trying to turn eyes away from the situation in the region.”
Ashton further valued PM Miqati’s stances “for preserving Lebanon’s coherence and unity in this tough period,” and said after the meeting that it was “a very good one”.
