In a new violation for the ceasefire in Syria, a car bomb exploded on Saturday in front of a Syriac church in the Syria’s eastern city of Deir Ezzor.

The attack eroded a ceasefire which was brokered by UN envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and took effect on Friday for Eid al-Adha.

While state news agency, SANA, said there were no casualties, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that five people were killed in the blast.

State television said the blast caused damage to a Syriac church facade in the embattled city.

“In another violation of the declaration of the suspension of military operations during the period of Eid al-Adha, the armed terrorist groups on Saturday blew up a car bomb in front of the Syriac Church on the main road in the city of Deir Ezzor,” SANA said.

“The explosion caused great material damage to the Church's façade,” the agency said further.
