The head of the UN atomic agency Yukiya Amano said on Thursday that inspecting Parchin complex near Tehran would be “very useful” despite the extensive earth-moving work there by the Iranian authorities.
In a council on Foreign Relations Conference on Thursday, Amano said that the IAEA has concerns in which its capacity to verify would have been severely undermined. However, Amano said he continues to believe that having access is very useful to have better understanding of the past and current activities in Parchin.
According to AFP, IAEA accused Iranian authorities of undermining its effort to probe suspected nuclear weapons research at Parchin facility through possible clean-up operations.
Amano said that the UN team entered the complex in 2005, but “the team didn’t have the information to identify the right spot to inspect”. “This time, we have additional information. We requested access to particular sites and buildings of Parchin”, he added.
Amano said that once the agency made the request, the satellite imagery showed “very extended activities by Iran, such as demolition of buildings, removal of soils, and moving fences”.
