A top Palestinian official said Thursday that the Zionist entity will be “held accountable” for its plan to construct more than 5,000 illegal settler units in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The settlers and the Israeli regime should know they will be held accountable, said Nabil Abu Rudeina, a spokesman for acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas.
The remarks came shortly after the entity approved plans for the building of a new settlement city in the southern West Bank.
Gush Eztion regional council, a local settler council, said on Thursday that the Israeli ministry of military affairs officially accepted the initial plans to build 523 settle units in the area as a first step in creating the new settlement city.
The construction of the new settlement city came while Tel Aviv approved the construction of thousands of new settler units on the occupied land, sparking widespread condemnation.
The member states of the UN Security Council, except the United States, condemned the Israeli plan on Wednesday, and called for an immediate halt to the settlement plans.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also issued a statement on Thursday, condemning the entity’s plans to build more settlement units.
The Israeli occupation issued tenders for 1,048 new settler units in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. On the same day, Tel Aviv also approved the construction of over 2,600 new settler units, which are planned to be built in Givat HaMatos, a village located in the south of al-Quds.
