Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the Iranian capital, discussing latest developments.
During his one-day trip, al-Mikdad also held talks with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in which he appreciated Iran's efforts to end Syrian crisis.
According to the report of Foreign Ministry Media Department, Mikdad presented a report on the latest diplomatic developments in his country, including his recent visit to Moscow as well as with the UN Special Envoy for Syria affairs Lakhdar Brahimi.
He also praised Iran's efforts, including the six-article plan to end Syrian crisis and called it as sign of Tehran's role in stability and establishment of peace in the region.
Salehi underlined Iran's principled stances in support for Syrian government and people and stressed that taking decisions about Syrian future should be made by its own people and Iran condemns any kind of foreign interference in internal affairs of independent states, including Syria.
He added that considering Syrian government’s readiness for dialogue and political settlement of the crisis, those countries which are opposed to political solution and talk are responsible for continuation of the crisis.
Salehi expressed hope that with cooperation and constructive interaction between effective countries of the region, stability and tranquility could return to Syria.
In the meantime, An Iranian Foreign Ministry official said on Sunday that Salehi will pay an official visit to Egypt on January 9. The talks will mainly focus on the issues of Palestine and the crisis in Syria, he said.
The Iranian official also stated that the visit would take place at the invitation of Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr. It will be Salehi’s second visit to Cairo since Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi took office in June 2012. He was in Cairo in mid-September for a meeting of the contact group on Syria.
Salehi left Tehran for Benin on Saturday on a tour of African countries, which will also take him to Ghana and Burkina Faso.
