Israeli occupation police backed by bulldozers early Sunday evicted Palestinians from a hilltop camp they set up in a West Bank area in protest against Zionist settlements.
About 200 Palestinian activists set up the camp, named ‘Bab al-Shams’ (Gate of the Sun in Arabic), on Friday in the controversial E1 area between occupied annexed east al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the settlement of Maaleh Adumim.
This area was slated by occupation forces for Zionist settlements.
The protesters had defied Israeli orders to leave until police moved in at around 2.30 am (0030 GMT) Sunday.
"Hundreds of Israeli police came from all directions, surrounding all those who were in the tents and arresting them one by one," Palestinian legislator Mustafa Barghouti told AFP.
Protest organizers said that six people were hurt as they were carried away by Israeli police and vowed that the protest would not be the last of its kind.
"This is not the end of the popular struggle and it will continue in its full strength," the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee said in a statement.
But occupation police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP that no arrests had been made.
About 500 police took part in the Israeli operation, he added.
