Aleppo University after the attackOn the first day of exams, twin blasts ripped through a university campus in Syria’s largest city on Tuesday, claiming the lives of more than 80 people, mostly students, in the biggest attack of its kind targeting Syria since the crisis erupted two years ago.

The explosions reportedly struck an area between the University of Aleppo's halls of residence and the architecture faculty on the first day of exams.

Aleppo's governor put the death toll at 82 and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 83 people had died.

Syrian state media said a terrorist group hit the University campus with two rockets. However, the Syrian opposition claimed the attack was caused by missiles fired by warplanes but no witnesses said they heard of warplanes at the scene.

The people martyred in Tuesday’s blasts were mostly innocent students taking their mid-year exams and civilians who sought refuge in the university dorms after fleeing militant attacks in the city.
