Maduro criticized Henrique Capriles, who was defeated in front of late President Hugo Chavez during the presidential elections in October 2012.

“You wretched loser! You have shown your true face - that of a fascist,” Maduro said on Sunday, referring to Capriles, who announced that he had accepted his nomination for the leadership of the main opposition coalition for the April 14 vote to elect a successor for Chavez.

Capriles had earlier accused Maduro of taking advantage of the death of Chavez to stage a political campaign.

The acting Venezuelan president also stated that Capriles “is looking for the people of Venezuela to… go on the path of violence.” Maduro urged Venezuelans to “not fall into provocations.”

A recent poll by Hinterlaces showed that Maduro was leading with 14 points over Capriles.
On Sunday, mourners paid tribute to Chavez during a religious service held at the military academy in Caracas, where Chavez’s casket has been placed.

Chavez died at a military hospital in Caracas on March 5 at the age of 58 after a two-year battle with cancer.

He founded the movement of Bolivarian Revolution to establish popular democracy and economic independence and bring about the equal distribution of wealth in Latin America. Chavez was one of the key players in the progressive movement that has swept across Latin America over the past few years.
