United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council have condemned a recent bombing inside a mosque in the Syrian capital, which left at least 49 people dead.
On Friday, the UN chief and the 15-member council issued statements denouncing the deadly attack on the al-Iman mosque in Damascus on Thursday.
Ban expressed his “deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” and said the “latest atrocity, along with others prior to it, should be promptly and fully investigated and perpetrators brought to justice.”
“A political solution is the only way out of this conflict,” the statement said.
The Security Council also “condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack,” and expressed “sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this heinous act and to the people of Syria and wished a swift recovery to the injured.”
Senior Sunni cleric Mohammed Said Ramadan al-Bouti, 84, was killed in the attack that left over 80 others injured.
