Huge crowds gathered at the Umayyad Mosque, where the funeral was held, amid tight security measures.

Mourners carried al-Bouti and his grandson’s coffins, draped in white cloth, on their shoulders amid shouts of “God is Great.”

The grand scholar was then being buried in a courtyard at the rear of the mosque near the tomb of Saladin, a medieval Muslim ruler.

Al-Bouti, his grandson and 48 others were martyred on Thursday night when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a mosque where the Sheikh was giving a religious lesson.

High-level political, Islamic, and Christian figures took part in the funeral, including Information minister Umran Zoubi, Syria Mufti Sheik Badreddine Hassoun.Sheikh al-Bouti funeral

Mufti Hassoun warned the conspirators against Syria that if this country falls and all of them will fall also, as he urged President Bashar al-Assad to re-call for dialogue.
He also adressed those who held weapons against Syria, saying that they still have chance to change their stance.

The Head of Hezbollah Juristic Council, Sheikh Mohamad Yazbek, offered condolences on behalf of Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah.
We will continue on the same path,” said Sheik Yazbek, adding: “We will return the blow to the enemies of Syria and the enemies of the nation.”

Ayatollah Sheikh Mohamad Ali Taskhiri also offered condolences on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
