“No government can survive against the will of its people”
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a “sincere warning and piece of advice” for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak telling him, “we are all passing, and we will be judged by what we left behind.” Erdogan called on Mubarak to listen to his people and meet their desire for change, saying the era of governments surviving on repression was over. “No government can survive against the will of its people,” Erdogan said in an address to his party at the Turkish parliament in Ankara on Tuesday. He said the election that’s results are already known are not elections and that freedoms cannot be neglected, stressing that democracy is not a charity by sultans, but is a human right. Erdogan said the Middle Eastern societies are “dynamic” and believes in human rights and this requires change, but with stability. He addressed the peoples of the region by saying: “We have to trust ourselves and continue our battle of right and freedom without resorting to the violence that leads to terrorism.” Addressing the Egyptian people, Erdogan said: that democracy is your right but you should preserve the values of your country. “We do not want a drop of blood to flow as a result of Egyptian status quo,” Erdogan stressed, noting that Ankara is by the side of the Egyptians as it was with Tunisia.
