A powerful quake hit southern Bushehr province on Tuesday killing at least 20 people, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.
Quoting a local health official, the agency said at least 20 bodies have been taken to the morgue in the city of Khormoj, east of provincial capital Bushehr.
The death toll belongs to the villages of Shanbe and Tasouj. “Race-against-time rescue operations are underway in trouble spots by local relief workers,” IRNA said.
According to earlier reports 500 injured people also were sent to the nearest hospitals for treatment.
Rescue teams in Fars and Khuzestan provinces were airlifted for the trouble spots to help rescue operations in Bushehr province. One hundred ambulances with medical teams are dispatched to the province from Tehran.
