Suicide attempts in protest of unemployment go on in Tunisia, with the unemployed Aymen Ben Belgacem is in critical condition after he sets himself on fire.Ben Belgacem , 21, attempted suicide in El-Guettar in the Gafsa region of southern Tunisia on Saturday because of his "deplorable social conditions," union official Ammar Amrousia told AFP by telephone.
Amrousia told AFP on Tuesday that Ben Belgacem was being treated for burns at a hospital in the suburbs of Tunis.
A similar protest by Mohamed Bouazizi, a impoverished graduate in the central city of Sidi Bouzid, who died after setting himself on fire in December, triggered massive protests that led to the overthrow of president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14.
UN FIGURES OF UNREST DEATH TOLL
Meanwhile, the head of the UN human rights mission said that some of 219 people were killed and other 510 were wounded in the latest unrest.
147 people had died since the popular revolt began in mid-December while another 72 died in the country’s jails, Bacre Ndiaye told a press conference.
Ndiaye noted that these figures were not final, saying the world body was continuing its investigations.
The previous UN death toll for the Tunisian anti-government uprising was "at least 100 dead."
Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia last month after weeks of violent protests against his iron-fisted rule.
