The so-called Syrian National Council’s head, Moaz al-Khatib told the foreign-bcked opposition bloc that he was “determined” to resign, saying he sees a “screen full of blood.”
Posts on Khatib’s personal Facebook page Sunday indicated he was resigning.
“The whole Cabinet and ministers from several countries were present at the dinner when Moaz al-Khatib informed them that he was strongly determined to resign and refused to eat saying: ‘I only see a screen full of blood,’” the post said, referring to an earlier announcement last month by Khatib that he was stepping down.
“When a bird is in a cage it remains imprisoned, paralyzed, and yesterday I came out of the golden cage of deception I’ve been in ... and with the sons of Syria, no one else, I will continue the path toward freedom,” read an earlier post Sunday.
Meanwhile, a coalition member Marwan Hajjo confirmed Khatib’s resignation.
“I can confirm that Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib has resigned from the presidency,” Hajjo told AFP, following a pro-opposition “Friends of Syria” meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul.
When Khatib first resigned, “the Coalition’s General Assembly did not meet to discuss his resignation. But now, I can confirm Khatib’s resignation is final,” said Hajjo, who heads the coalition’s membership committee.
“Khatib is resigning to denounce the international community’s lack of real action on behalf of the Syrian people,” Hajjo said.
“The international community, the Friends of Syria group, should be providing heavy weapons to enable the Syrians to defend themselves.”
“But it is clear the international community doesn’t mean anything. It only acts according to its own prerogatives,” he added.
