Israeli occupation police said Sheikh Hussein was being questioned over a "disturbance" at Al-Aqsa mosque compound, a spokesman said.

The Mufti was taken from his home by detectives and was being questioned at a police station "on suspicion of involvement in a disturbance" that took place at the holy mosque on Tuesday, spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Earlier on Tuesday, some 40 extremist Zionists including MKs broke into al-Aqsa mosque to mark the 46th anniversary of the so called "the reunification of al-Quds” (Jerusalem), prompting clashes with Palestinians who were at the mosque.

Rosenfeld said that “some chairs were thrown at a group of Jews” during Tuesday event.

Commenting on the Mufti’s detention, Palestinian Authority Chief, Mahmoud Abbas, "condemned the occupying Israeli authorities' detention of Jerusalem mufti Mohammed Hussein," his office said in a statement.

Abbas "demanded the Israeli government release the mufti immediately, and said the arrest represents an audacious challenge to freedom of worship."
