Jerusalem police closed the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound to non-Muslim visitors on Thursday.
The decision followed disturbances on Wednesday in east Jerusalem where police clashed with Palestinians who hurled rocks during protests marking the anniversary of the entity's foundation in 1948.
The location, dubbed by Zionists the ‘Temple Mount in Israel’, is Islam's second-holiest site and is also Judaism's holiest place.
