The intense weather conditions precipitated some flooding and landslides, and affected at least nine different provinces.
The worst hit was Guangdong province, on the country’s southeast coast, in which 36 people were reported dead and a further 10 missing.
Guangdong expects to witness more rain, hail and windstorms in forthcoming days.
