The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov anticipated a prolonged unrest in the Middle East and North Africa. He also stressed that it would be painful.
During an international security conference in Moscow on May 23-24, Lavrov said this unrest would augment the dangers that will exceed the borders of the region.
In turn, the Director of the Presidential Cabinet Sergey Ivanov described the steps that aim at changing the leaders of some countries as extremely serious and that such steps would expand the area of instability.
In another context, Deputy Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Ryabkov said that arms contracts with the Syrian Ara Republic are perfectly legitimate and not restricted by any international resolution or any agreement signed by Russia, “Interfax” Russian news agency reported.
Ryabkov pointed that imposing unilateral sanctions by the United States is unacceptable and violates the international law.
He added that sanctions can be either in response to hostile countries or in case of a Security Council Resolution under chapter VII of the UN Charter, not a means to attain political interests.
This statement came as “The Washington Post” reported that the Foreign Affairs Committee in the US Senate ratified the draft law on the supply of weapons to the Syrian Opposition. The draft law further serves to impose sanctions against all the countries that supply weapons and oil to the Syrian government.
