King Abdollah II of Jordan called on Saturday at the opening of the World Economic Forum for an urgent political solution to the conflict raging in Syria.
King Abdallah II of Jordan called on Saturday at the opening of the World Economic Forum for an urgent political solution to the conflict raging in Syria.
"In Syria, a political solution is urgently needed to stop that country's dangerous fragmentation and to resolve the dire refugee crisis," the king said.
Jordan has sheltered around 500,000 Syrian refugees since the beginning of the Syrian crisis.
“Jordanians are generously sharing scarce water and other natural resources with the Syrian refugees that rate up to 10 percent of the population in Jordan,” King Abdallah stressed.
He further called the global community to increase the humanitarian assistance for the Syrian refugees and the countries that host them, especially Jordan and Lebanon.
Politically, King Abdallah II considered “that what is badly needed is an immediate end to the violence so that all the Syrian people can rebuild their country.”
The king’s statement comes in the light of the international call to hold a conference in Geneva to seek a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
King Abdallah also asserted that the Arab-Israeli conflict has to be addressed by all the parties to achieve an end for the Palestinian crisis. He also stressed “that this calamity directly leads to the growth of extremism in the Middle East.”
In this concern, King Abdollah noted an Arab peace initiative as pointing the way forward.
On the other hand, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said “that Syrian President Bashar Assad must not take part in the peace talks aimed at ending the Syrian crisis.
Al-Faisal mentioned “that Saudi Arabia supports the demands of the Syrian people.” So, he claimed that the Syrians refuse the participation of the Syrian President Bashar Assad in the peace talks.
Hinting at the role of Saudi Arabia in arming and financing the militant groups in Syria, al-Faisal asserted, “We are ready to provide the Syrians with all their needs and according to all their demands.”
The “New York Times” mentioned that Saudi Arabia supply the militants in Syria with weapons that it had already bought from Croatia.
