Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri said on Wednesday that the security situation in the country forces the extension of the Parliament term till the year of 2014.
“The security situation is the main reason for the ext sion of parliament, especially that what we are witnessing in this context prevents us from carrying out peaceful elections,” local media quoted speaker Berri as saying during a meeting for the Parliament’s bureau on Wednesday.
It was reported that the extension is likely to be till November 20, 2014.
Al-Manar correspondent reported that the Parliament’s bureau has agreed on extension of its mandate.
The correspondent said that the extension of the mandate is the only issue to be discussed at a parliamentary session on Friday.
In remarks published by local newspapers also on Wednesday, Berri said that purpose extending the parliament’s term is to avoid the negative repercussions of the security condition in Lebanon.
When asked about the stance of President Michel Sleiman over the issue, the speaker said: “The president has the right to challenge any decision if he wants.”
The president said he was against any extension of Parliament that is for more than six months.
