Iran hosted the international “Friends of Syria” peace conference on Wednesday afternoon under the title “Political Solution, Regional Stability.”
The conference was aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis in Syria.
High-ranking officials and representatives of over 40 world countries and regional and international organizations were present the daylong meeting.
It came as Russian and U.S. officials are trying to organize a peace conference on Syria in Geneva next month.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the foreign policy and national security commission in the Iranian parliament, accused in an interview with The Times the West of arming Syrian militants and contributing to the bloodshed during the war.
UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi stressed the international community's responsibility to address the crisis in Syria, and underlined the significance of the international conference underway in Tehran.
In a message to the conference, Brahimi stressed the deep impacts of the crisis in Syria on the region, and stressed that "all countries are responsible" for finding a solution to the crisis in Syria. "We should help Syria establish a national government and end people's sufferings," Brahimi reiterated in his message.
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also sent messages to the Friends of Syria meeting in Tehran.
Iran Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian had announced earlier that Iran has called on Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey to participate in the conference, but Qatar and Arabia refrained from participation.
