Hezbollah denounced on Monday the attack that targeted Imam of al-Quds Mosque in Sidon, Sheikh Maher Hammoud, stressing that the assassination attempt aimed at inciting sedition and disunity in favor of the Zionist scheme.
In a statement released by the party’s Media Relations, Hezbollah praised Sheikh Hammoud as a great Islamic and patriotic figure.
“The hand of crime sought at dawn on Monday to assassinate Sheikh Hammoud as he was going for prayers in the Mosque in his city of Sidon.”
Hezbollah stressed that the attack was a “criminal bid that is without doubt aimed at inflaming disunity and sedition in favor of the Zionist entity and its conspiratorial scheme against Lebanon and its people.”
The party hoped that Sheikh Hamoud “will remain in the Islamic field as a prop for resistance and a supportive voice for its fight.”
Hezbollah also urged the Lebanese security apparatus to “exert efforts in order to capture the criminals” and punish them.
The statement pointed out that the assassination bid comes in the context of attacks targeting Muslim figures in more than a region.
It added that the attack “indicates that there is a vicious scheme aimed to get rid of all the mindful figures that stand against those who seek sedition”.
Sheikh Hammoud was subjected to a failed assassination attempt as he was getting out of his house for prayers in al-Quds Mosque in Sidon.
