The Geneva 2 peace conference has been postponed till July, according to the American State Department.
The peace conference, which was supposed to be held in Geneva in June to start the negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition groups, has been postponed till July, according to the American State Department.
“We are still hopeful that the Syrian opposition will decide on its representatives in the conference,” said Jennifer Psaki, spokesman for the US State Department.
Psaki added that U.S. looks forward to the attendance and the agenda of the conference rather than its timeline, though “we seek to hold the conference as soon as possible.”
Psaki also asserted the continuous American support to the Syrian opposition, announcing a provision of USD 250 million.
The US official marked her country's understanding for the political difficulties the Syrian opposition is facing.
Those hardships regard the coalition expansion, electing a leadership and finalizing a decision to participate in Geneva 2.
It’s worth to mention that the hesitation and the lack of unity within the Syrian opposition groups caused the Geneva 2 postponement as Syrian leadership announced its readiness to participate in the conference and reach a final solution for the Syrian crisis.
