NATO Commander: No Plans for Military Operation in Syria

NATO commander, Gen. Philip Breedlove, said on Friday that NATO has no plans for launching a military operation in Syria now.

Breedlove statement came during his visit to the peacekeeping forces headquarters in the city of Pristina province of Serbia's Kosovo. The event was reported by Belgian media outlets.

"NATO has decided not to plan for any mission at the moment. We do not have any plans to operate in Syria," he said.

Breedlove also recalled the NATO deployment in the beginning of the year of "Patriot" defense Systems in Turkey on its border with Syria to protect the Turkish territory from possible Syrian air strikes.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen had repeatedly stressed that the coalition does not intend to intervene in Syria, and supports a political settlement in the country.

Syria was hit by a violent unrest since mid-March 2011, where the Syrian government accuses foreign actors of orchestrating the conflict, by supporting the militant opposition groups with arms and money.
