A new official toll noted that 31 Libyan were killed and more than 100 were injured after clashes erupted on Saturday between the fighters of “Libya Shield” battalion and demonstrators in the eastern Benghazi.
The clashes started when the demonstrators tried to expel the fighters of “Libya Shield” from their headquarters in Benghazi. Different kinds of weapons were used.
Youssef al-Tarhoune, the leader of “Libya Shield” battalion, considered that “the demonstration was peaceful at the beginning, yet a number of gunmen started shooting our headquarters.”
A large number of policemen deployed in Benghazi during the killed funerals on Sunday.
“Libya Shield” battalion consists of the rebels who fought Muammar Gaddafi regime. Its leader claim that it belongs to the ministry of defense and that the government depends on its fighters to settle security disturbances due to the weakness of the national army.
