Turkey protests faced with violenceTurkish protesters refused to leave streets on Saturday after PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to halt the redevelopments of Gezi part, indicating that their movement was about something bigger than a conservation struggle.

“We will continue our resistance in the face of any injustice and unfairness taking place in our country,” the Taksim Solidarity group, representative of the protesters, said in a statement.

“This is only the beginning,” he added.

Erdogans’s proposal on Friday was the first major conciliatory gesture after violent attempts by the police to force peaceful protestors out of the streets, which left four killed and nearly 7,500 injured.

In the capital Ankara, meanwhile, riot police again fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators overnight. Around 30 protesters were arrested.
