The Interior Ministry announced Saturday evening the results of the presidential elections.
Sheikh Hasan Rouhani gained 18,613,329 out of 36,704,156 votes as what equals to 50.7% of the total number of votes.
Rouhani’s main competitor Mohammad Qalibaf secured only 6,077,292 votes.
The electoral results of the rest of the candidates were as the following:
Saeed Jalili won 4,168,946 votes
Mohsen Rezai secured 3,884,412 votes
Ali Akbar Velayati gained 2,268,753 votes
Mohammad Gharazi received only 446,015 votes
The ministry also said that the turnout of the electorates was 72.7%.
This heavy participation of the Iranians in the presidential elections came in response to what the Supreme Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei stressed that upcoming elections should create a political epic in the country, as enemies are striving hard to decrease people's turnout through various means and plots.
“Votes for any candidate of Presidential Election would be confidence votes for Islamic Republic and election’s authenticity,” his eminence said.
Hasan Rouhani
Dr. Hasan Rohani was born in 1948 in the city of Sarkha which belongs to Semnan province. He descended from family known for religiosity and struggle against the Shah's regime.
Sheikh Rouhani began religious studies in 1960 in the seminary of Samnan city. He then moved to the holy city of Qom in 1961, where he attended seminars for the senior clerics, like Sheikh Morteza Haeri, Fazel Lankarani, and others.
Parallel to his seminary studies, Rouhani pursued his academic studies where he earned a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Tehran in 1972. He then moved abroad to follow his studies where he obtained his master and doctoral degrees from Glasgow Caledonian University, London, in 1995 and 1999.
Sheikh Hasan Rouhani is a key figure in the Iranian politics. He served as Deputy Speaker and as the representative of Ayatollah Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei at the Supreme National Security Council. As a pragmatic conservative, he was a chief negotiator in nuclear talks with the European Union. He also heads the Expediency Council’s Strategic Research Center.
