Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that talks about a no-fly zone in Syria and the unilateral decisions do not help holding the Geneva II conference on Syria crisis.
During a joint interview with Associated Press and Bloomberg agencies, Lavrov stated that world powers should understand their goal first:
“If the goal is to hold the conference, then we should avoid discussing the air embargo or any acts to impose it, as well as the confrontation debates. We should also refrain from adopting unilateral decisions in the UN Security Council or the UN Human Rights Council, because all that does not help to create the necessary atmosphere for holding the conference,” he said.
Lavrov further tackled the US and allies’ decision to provide the Syrian opposition groups with medium and light weapons, stating that “sending arms from the United States and other western countries to the Syrian opposition groups in illegal action.”
The Russian official stressed that preventing the al-Nusra Front from attending the Geneva II is non-debatable because it is recognized as terrorist organization.
